Toronto―St. Paul’s Restore Safe Streets Update

We are happy to provide data and more clarity on our recent Restore Safe Streets mailer.

Attached is a graph illustrating the Major Crime Incidents in our riding over the past 5 years, with a trend line showing the increase in these incidents over time.

Additional Toronto―St. Paul’s riding facts:

  • Between 2023 and 2024 there was an overall jump in MCI of 13.7% when auto theft is excluded
  • Year over year ‘23/’24 Theft Over $5,000 increased 68.8%
  • Year over year ‘23/’24 Assaults increased 23.7%. Of these, assault with a weapon is up 39%.

Crime in Toronto:

  • The Toronto Police Association has pointed out that shootings are up 45% and gun-related homicides are up 62% in Toronto in just the last year.
  • After a violent carjacker in Toronto shot at cars on the highway while out on bail, the Toronto Police Association was forced to call out the Liberals failed gun policies and their catch and release bail policies.

Crime across Canada:

  • Violent crime has increased by 50% since Trudeau became Prime Minister.
  • Since 2015, homicides have increased from 612 to 778, a 27% increase (166 victims more).
  • 256 people were killed by a criminal who was out on bail or another form of release in 2022.
  • The proportion of the accused in custody or under community supervision (which includes those on bail, on remand, sentenced to custody or probation) at the time the homicide was committed was 34% in 2023.
  • Violent gun crime is up by 116% since the Liberals formed government.

When Conservatives refer to Trudeau’s catch-and-release laws, they are specifically referencing Liberal Bills C-75 and C-5.

Bill C-75 made it easier to get bail and Bill C-5 repeals mandatory minimum sentences all the drug-related offences in the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act (CDSA), 13 firearms-related offences and a tobacco-related offence.
Thank you again for taking the time to apprise me of your concerns. Your feedback is vital to best represent and understand the community of Toronto―St. Paul’s in Ottawa.
Sincerely,

Don Stewart, MP
